Wow... What a weekend!
I have amazing memories of Stradbroke Island from a kid camping, 4WDing and enjoying the beaches. So as we signed on to support this years event I eagerly awaited this weekend. The 100 day countdown was painfully slow with images taunting me from the Weekend Warrior Events Facebook page.
However the 15th of September arrived and we were up to watch the sun rise as we caught our 8am ferry from the mainland. We were treated to perfect blue water, warm sand between our toes and the sun shining at full strength. Even the registration "tent" was located within 50m of the beach with views of the 1k ocean swim.
The atmosphere was that of people enjoying a long weekend, island style - drinking wine, beers and "pre-race" steaks all with good company at the Stradbroke Island Beach Hotel. The crowd was mixed with some serious contenders such as the world record holder for the English Channel swim crossing!
We woke up leisurely the next morning and then is was time for the 3 big events of the 8km run, inaugural road bike duathlon and the original recipe off road triathlon.
All I can say is well done to everyone who competed as the course was tough but one of the most scenic I've come across. The competitors all came across the line smiling for their individual reasons, personal bests or just finishing. It will definitely be on my event calender in 2013!
The Straddie Salute has cemented itself as a must do multisport weekend that boasts amazing scenery, great company, heaps for the family to do and just a great healthy and relaxing weekend away.
