Surface
Synthetic athletics tracks are harder and less forgiving than grass, trail or road surfaces. The firm, consistent surface increases the impact load transmitted through the lower limb with every stride — particularly relevant for athletes training high volumes on the track.
Intensity
Track athletes train and compete at significantly higher intensities than most other running disciplines. This is one of the most important and most misunderstood injury risk factors in athletics. An athlete's Strava data might show their weekly kilometre total hasn't increased — but switching from longer, comfortable running to high-intensity track sessions dramatically spikes the power and load of those kilometres. The body experiences this as a significant load increase even when the distance looks the same on paper. This is a common trigger for stress reactions and other overuse injuries in track athletes. Growing Bodies on the Track
Junior track athletes face additional challenges. Track shoes are traditionally thin, hard and built for pure performance — with minimal cushioning and protection. For growing athletes training high volumes, this combination of firm surface, high intensity and minimal footwear protection creates significant injury risk. The Three-Shoe System for Track Athletes
One of the most effective injury prevention strategies for athletes spending significant time at the track is a structured approach to footwear across different parts of the training session. Our podiatrists advise many of our track athletes on a three-shoe system:
- Warmup and volume shoes — more cushioned, comfortable and protective shoes for the early parts of the session, drills, and any higher-volume running. Getting this portion of training done in a protective shoe significantly reduces cumulative load on bones and tendons.
- Training performance shoes — faster and more responsive shoes that balance protection with performance elements. Used for the quality portions of the session — intervals, tempo work and race-pace efforts.
- Race shoes — all-out performance shoes for competition only. Pure speed, minimal protection. Given the short, sharp nature of racing and the fact that athletes are typically well-taped and prepared, the reduced protection is appropriate for this specific context.
This system allows athletes to train at high intensity and high volume while managing the cumulative load on the lower limb — reducing injury risk without compromising performance.

Bone stress injuries are one of the most serious concerns in track athletes.
