Teenage Athlete Overuse Injuries Brisbane
Teenage athletes are particularly prone to overuse injuries. From around 12 years of age, a unique combination of factors converges — rapid growth, high training loads, multi-sport participation and increasing competition demands — that makes this age group one of the most injury-susceptible groups we see at our Brisbane podiatry clinic.

Multi-Sport Participation and Unwillingness to Specialise
Kids at this age are often talented across multiple sports and aren't yet willing — or ready — to drop any of them. They tend to be good at lots of different sports and will continue playing all of them simultaneously. A teenage athlete might be playing rugby league, rugby union and soccer at the same time, across club, school and representative levels.
Stacking of Training and Competition
Representative teams begin at this age, adding a layer of training and competition on top of existing club and school commitments. Each team has its own coach who sets training for that sport independently — with no visibility over what the athlete is doing across their other sports. When multiple sports overlap, and when representative and club or school teams run concurrently, the result is a massive and rapid increase in total training load across the week. Common Overuse Injuries in Teenage Athletes
The overuse injuries we most commonly treat in teenage athletes at our Brisbane clinic include:
- Shin Splints (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome) — one of the most common overuse injuries in running-based sports, caused by repetitive impact and rapid load increases
- Stress Reactions and Stress Fractures — bone stress injuries that develop when load exceeds the bone's capacity to adapt, particularly in runners and multi-sport athletes
- Achilles Tendinopathy — overload of the Achilles tendon, common in athletes who train across multiple sports with different footwear and surfaces
- Hamstring Tendinopathy — proximal hamstring overuse, particularly in athletes involved in sprinting, kicking and change-of-direction sports
- Plantar Heel Pain — load-related heel pain that can develop in teenage athletes, distinct from the growth plate heel pain (Sever's disease) seen in younger children
- Knee Pain — including patellofemoral pain and patellar tendinopathy, common in athletes involved in court sports, running and football codes
- Ankle Sprains and Chronic Ankle Instability — repeated ankle sprains in multi-sport athletes can lead to chronic instability if not properly managed
The Role of Training Load
The single biggest driver of overuse injuries in teenage athletes is a rapid or excessive increase in training load. When multiple sports, representative teams and school competitions overlap, the total weekly load can spike dramatically — often without any single coach or parent being aware of the full picture. Assessment and Treatment
Our Brisbane sports podiatrists are experienced in assessing overuse injuries in teenage athletes. Assessment includes a full load history across all sports, biomechanical assessment, footwear review and, where indicated, imaging referral. Treatment is tailored to the athlete's injury, sport demands and stage of growth.
Early assessment is important — overuse injuries that are ignored or managed with rest alone often recur when the athlete returns to the same training load without addressing the underlying cause.
