Running Injuries Brisbane | Sports Podiatrist

Running is one of the most popular sports in Brisbane — and one of the most common reasons people visit our clinic. At Shoes Feet Gear, we treat runners across every level and every discipline, from kids discovering the joy of parkrun for the first time to elite athletes competing in some of the most demanding endurance events on the planet. Our Bardon clinic sits directly adjacent to Mount Coot-tha, Brisbane's most popular trail running destination, and our team includes runners who have competed in marathons themselves.

Brisbane Running Community

We have strong affiliations with the Brisbane running community, including Brisbane Run Squad, junior running groups, and private school athletics and cross country programs. We have helped patients complete events ranging from their first 5km through to the Gold Coast Marathon, UTMB Mont-Blanc, the 4 Deserts Ultramarathon Series and — in one extraordinary case — running around the world, averaging 55km per day for 576 days.

We bring the same care and attention to every runner, regardless of where they are in their journey. If you run, we can help.

Types of Running We Treat

Running injuries vary significantly depending on the discipline, the surface, the distance and the athlete. We have dedicated pages for each of the running disciplines we commonly treat:

  • Distance Running Injuries — road runners, high mileage athletes, half and full marathon preparation, and extreme endurance events
  • Marathon Injuries — Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast marathon training, the shoe degradation problem, and getting injured runners to the finish line
  • Trail Running Injuries — Mount Coot-tha regulars, technical terrain, ankle sprains, ultra events and trail shoe advice
  • Cross Country Running Injuries — school cross country programs, Gregory Terrace athletics, coach collaboration and load management
  • Athletics Injuries — track and field, the intensity vs kilometres problem, and the three-shoe system for track athletes

Why Runners Get Injured

The vast majority of running injuries are overuse injuries — they develop gradually from the accumulation of load rather than from a single incident. The most common causes we see are:

  • Training load errors — increasing mileage or intensity too quickly, or returning to training too soon after a break or illness
  • Biomechanical factors — foot posture, gait pattern and lower limb mechanics that place uneven stress through the body
  • Footwear — worn-out shoes, incorrect shoe selection, or transitioning too quickly between shoe types
  • Surface and terrain changes — switching between road, trail, track and grass without adequate preparation

Common Running Injuries We Treat

Footwear for Runners

Shoe selection is one of the most important injury prevention factors for runners. Our podiatrists and run specialty team assess foot type, gait and training demands to recommend the right shoe for each runner and each discipline. We stock a comprehensive range of road running, trail running and performance shoes. View our trail running shoe range.

School and Junior Running

We treat a large number of junior runners through school athletics and cross country programs, parkrun and junior running groups. Growing athletes have unique injury considerations — including growth plate injuries, tight muscles and tendons, and the load demands of competing across multiple school and club programs simultaneously.
